Threadworm

Threadworms, or pinworms, are parasitic worms that hatch inside the large intestine and around the anus. They are the UK's most common worm infection, and the good news is that threadworms are easy to treat at home.

If you suspect that you or your child may have threadworms, look for very small, thread-like white worms in the stools or around the anus. The most common symptom of threadworms is an itchy bottom, especially at night.

It's very easy to infect others with threadworms and the eggs can survive for up to three weeks, so when one person in the household is infected, everyone needs to be treated. In addition to this, strict hygiene methods must be followed for up to six weeks to prevent spreading or re-infection - the most crucial being to avoid scratching, as threadworm eggs can become stuck to the fingertips and then spread around the home.

Our Advice

  • Wash the hands and nails carefully before eating and after going to the toilet.
  • Treat the whole household and tell close friends.
  • Use separate towels.
  • Have a shower or bath the morning after treatment.
  • Wear figure-hugging pyjamas or underwear in bed to prevent scratching.
  • Cut the finger nails short.
  • If threadworms return ask our pharmacist for advice.

Products we recommend for this condition are:

  • Ovex Suspension 30ml - Provides 6 x 5ml treatments of 100mg Mebendazole for the treatment of threadworms.  A single dose will kill threadworms, however, it may not destroy their eggs, which can cause re-infection and infect other people.  It is therefore strongly recommended that all members of the family (except pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under two) are treated at the same time and that precautions are taken to prevent re-infection.  Suitable for adults and children over 2 years.  Please read the enclosed leaflet carefully before use.  For oral administration.  The treatment is a single 5ml dose per person.  Take one 5ml dose only.
