Why should I stop smoking?

Stopping smoking can benefit your health, your family's health and your wallet.

Your health

Within the first 24 hours of quitting carbon monoxide will be removed from the body, your oxygen levels, blood pressure and pulse rate will return to normal and your lungs will begin to clear.

After five years of stopping smoking your risk of heart attack is half that of a smoker and after 10 years smoke free your risk of heart attack is the same as if you had never smoked.2

Your family's health

When you smoke, the smoke you exhale and the smoke produced by the burning of the cigarette combine to produce 'secondhand smoke'.  80% of this secondhand smoke is invisible and has no smell.

Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of lung cancer and heart disease by approximately a quarter.  In addition children exposed to smoke are off school due to illness more ften than those who are not exposed.  By stopping smoking you not only improve your own health but that of your family.

Your wallet

Stopping smoking will save you money.  If you smoke 5 cigarettes a day you could save £653 in a year and this may increase to £2617 over the year if you smoke 20 cigarettes a day.*  Perhaps try putting the money you would spend on cigattes to one side and use this to spend on a reward for quitting.

*savings will vary from person to person and are intended as a guide only.
