Warts and verrucas are both caused by a human papilloma virus (HPV) infection, which causes excessive quantities of the hard protein keratin to develop in the top layer of the skin. These deposits, or warts, can appear by themselves or in clusters and have a distinctive, rough appearance. Warts that appear on the soles of the feet are known as verrucas.
Children and teenagers are more susceptible to warts and verrucas, but almost everyone will experience them in their lifetime. They’re contracted through skin-to-skin contact, and can also be picked up from a contaminated surface. You’re more likely to pick up the infection if your skin is damaged or wet; that’s why so many people get verrucas after visiting a public swimming pool.
If you have warts or a verruca, you don’t have to visit your GP for treatment. Rowlands Pharmacy has a great choice of verruca treatments and wart removal gels containing salicylic acid from Scholl, Bazuka and Peditech that allow you to take care of the problem at home, so you can get on with enjoying your life.
Our Advice Centre has information on warts and verrucas. Please remember that if you have a wart that you cannot identify, or if it bleeds, changes appearance, spreads, causes you pain or is in the genital area, you should visit your GP right away.
