Pneumonia is swelling (inflammation) of the tissue in one or both lungs and is usually caused by a bacterial infection.
At the end of the bronchi (breathing tubes) in your lungs there are clusters of bronchioles (tiny air sacs). If you have pneumonia, these bronchioles become inflamed and fill up with fluid making it feel like you are drowning.
Mild pneumonia can usually be treated at home with rest, antibiotics and by drinking plenty of fluids. More severe cases may need hospital treatment.
How quickly you improve will depend on how severe your pneumonia is.
Most people will recover fully after treatment, but pneumonia can lead to serious complications such as pleurisy, a lung abscess or blood poisoning (Septicaemia).
As a general guide, after:
One week – fever should have resolved.
Four weeks – chest pain and mucus production should have substantially reduced.
Six weeks – cough and breathlessness should have substantially reduced.
Three months – most symptoms should have resolved, but you may still feel very tired (fatigue).
Six months – most people will feel back to normal.

Have the vaccination.
To protect our customers, we offer 2 different pneumonia vaccinations, Prevenar 13® & PPV, in our Travel Health Clinic branches. Both contain different strains and therefore for full protection it is beneficial for our customers to have both vaccinations (though not at the same time).
Just like the annual flu vaccination service, some of our customers may be eligible for a FREE pneumonia vaccination from their GP. However the GPs only offer the PPV vaccination. So for wider protection customers could also have the Prevenar 13® vaccination in the pharmacy before going to their GP. There needs to be an 8 week gap between both types of vaccinations if they have the Prevenar 13® first.
If customers are not eligible for the free vaccination then the customer can receive the pneumonia PPV vaccination in our branches too. Please use Moodle to check the NHS eligibility.
