Anyone who is sexually active can catch a sexually transmitted Infection. Many STIs have no symptoms even though the infection exists and some have symptoms that appear and then
disappear.

Our Advice

Warning signs to look out for are:

• Discharge from the penis or vagina or unusual vaginal bleeding
• Rashes, sores, blisters, itchiness, lumps or pain in the genital area
• Burning sensation when urinating or the need to urinate more often
• Pain during sex.

We advise the use of condoms every time you have sex. Condoms are the only form of contraception to protect you against STIs and unplanned pregnancy at the same time.

If you’ve had unprotected sex and think you may be at risk you should seek medical attention even if you don’t have symptoms. You can visit your GP or your local sexual health clinic.
