Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Description

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition caused by spasm of the bowel with symptoms of colicky pain in the stomach and a change in bowel habit (constipation or diarrhoea). There may be bloating and excess wind.

If your symptoms have lasted for longer than 2 weeks, ask our pharmacist for advice.

Our Advice
  • Increase your fibre intake. Fibre can be found in fruit and vegetables and wholemeal bread.
  • Drink plenty of fluids - not cola or coffee or tea.
  • Avoid foods that can cause wind e.g. fizzy drinks and spicy foods.
  • Take regular exercise.
  • Eat regularly and avoid large meals.
  • Don't rush your food. Create time to sit and relax while you eat your meal
  • Take time to relax as stress can cause irritable bowel syndrome.
  • If you have sudden abdominal pains see our pharmacist as soon as possible.
